Departing from action / Maria Stokłosa

The subject of this project is a development of an improvisation based dance performance. The main structural concept is to invert the traditional order of preparation and presentation of a piece. This project begins with a performance and is followed by continuous shifts between studio work, reflection, feedback and public showings. It is a solo work charged by a persistent exchange with audience and collaborators from dance, visual arts and theatre.

In total 40 public showings are taking place in various spaces and for different number of audiences: from one to one hundred. There is a changing number of objects designed by Alicja Bielawska, that reappear in the work in various configurations. For Maria Stoklosa – choreographer and a solo performer, showings act as laboratory for the performance to emerge and transform. In 2015 Maria Stoklosa was invited by Meg Foley – Philadelphia based choreographer – to take part in the development and performing of Action is Primary. This intense collaboration overseas inspired Maria Stoklosa to take the practice of Meg Foley to her own environment and set it to a new direction. Currently Meg and Maria work separately continuing the development of their individual solo performances, regularly reporting to each other their findings online.

Departing from Action never reaches a final form. It’s transformations are powered by a ongoing study of its elements: movement, image, objects, speech, emotion and spectator. The center of the work spontaneously and intentionally shifts between these different areas, as does the attention of the performer and the audience.
